About this Site

This site was developed to help writers, of all skill levels, to find a creative outlet where they can explore ideas and writing styles, as well as gain valuable feedback from other writers.  Whether your are just beginning to feel the creative energy from putting word to paper, or if you have been writing and publish for years, you will hopefully find the free flow of information from this site useful and stimulating.

I have been putting pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard, for most of my life, and I cannot say that I have found a greater sense of satisfaction than I have found when wiling away an afternoon engrossed in the creation of one story or another.  However, for the past few years, I have been struggling with the effort that it takes to sit down and start putting words to paper.  I either come home from work too tired, or mentally drained, and I cannot get up the motivation to start writing, or I am too committed to other activities to find the time to write.  I know that I am not alone in this feeling, and that is why I created this site.  I thought that if I had a place to post little bits and pieces of my writing, some exercises to help generate brain waves, and created a forum to share ideas with other writers, I would actually start to rediscover the desire that I once knew.  That is the genesis of this site.

My writing interest revolves around science fiction, or futuristic fiction.  By futuristic fiction, I mean stories about the future on earth and in our culture, but not necessarily in the genre that we have all come to know as science fiction.  The movie "Children of Men" would be a good example of what I mean.  Although I do enjoy the science fiction genre, I am more focused on the stories and the development of the characters rather than the world around them, and that, I believe, is the underlying structure of any good writing. Without character and story development the rest of the story structure such as plot, location, conflict, etc. cannot stand on its own.

As I have mentioned before, I am not a teacher or a published author.  I have an Associates of Arts in Computer Information Systems, Bachelor of Arts Degree in Management Information Systems, and took many opportunities while in college to polish my writing and creative skills.  I have completed a creative writing course offered by the Writer's Digest School, and I am currently the Chronicler for an SCA group called the Shire of Heraldshill and put out the quarterly newsletter for this group.  (For more information about my interest in the SCA, please visit the webpage Wedding/SCA.)

Other interests that I have are reading, drawing, and studying history.  I have learned that even for someone who looks to write about the future, the past has given me many ideas and inspirations for my stories.

As I continue to develop this site, I hope to learn new aspects about writing, meet others who are on the same journey that I am on, and I mostly hope to have a good time on the journey.  After all, writing is about the joy that can be found in putting word to paper and creating a whole new world of possibilities.

I thank you for taking the time to visit my site and explore the information contained on the pages.  I hope you find the information here helpful and entertaining, and if you share an interest in creative writing and would like to contact me, please feel free to email me at KPS Consulting.

Sincerely,

Russ Echelbarger
