Wedding/SCAA Pioneer WeddingIn the waning days of 2003, I had the fortune of meeting a very interesting young lady, Lisa. Introduced by friends, Lisa and I instantly hit it off. We learned that we shared many common interests, including an interest in history. In fact, nearly a year after we first met, we became engaged in Gettysburg, PA. A year after that, we were married in a 1850 pioneer wedding, which took place on the grounds of her parents farm. Which coincidently enough, turned 150 years old.During the preparations for the wedding, Lisa completed quite a bit of research in pioneer weddings, and posted the information on her website. There you will also find pictures of the grand event with many family members and friends "dressing up" for the occasion. So please follow the link to her site and see what consists of an authentic pioneer wedding. Society of Creative AnachronismAnother interest that Lisa has introduced me to was the SCA. Have you ever seen a Knight in shinning armor doing battle in the middle of your home town's central park. Then you have seen a portion of what the SCA has to offer. The SCA puts on various events nation wide and throughout the year. The group creates individual personas, researches their personas for authenticity, and presents them at these various events.Much time and effort is put into not only each persona, but into each event as well. Lisa has introduced me to this group and has been helping me to put a persona of my own together. I will add more of what I am doing in the future, as well as creating links to sites that can help you put your own persona together. For the time being, if you would like to see the extensive research Lisa has done for her own persona, please follow the link to her website. There you will find much information concerning her persona, as well as links to other sites which can aid you in creating a persona of your own. The Shire of Heraldshill No, that is not a misspelling, it is Heraldshill, and it is the name of our local SCA group here in Mason City, Iowa. The name is derived from the musical the "Music Man," and is a play off of the main character's name, Professor Herald Hill. The creator of the Music Man, Meredith Wilson, was originally from Mason City. I have been with the group for nearly three years now, and I have been looking for a way to get more involved with the group, as well as giving something back them. Since completing college last December, I have decided to take advantage of my new found freedom by delving back into the writing arena once again. Recently, I accepted the position as Chronicler for our group's newsletter, "The Parade." I feel that this will really help me to flex my literary muscles and clear out a few cobwebs. Not to mention the fact that it will help me focus on organized thoughts and deadlines. If you would like to learn more about our little group, please visit our website at http://www.heraldshill.org. If your in the area, please drop in on our meetings. The times and meeting places are listed on the site.
